Strategy #7: Find The
Extreme
- What extreme could you embrace? Most,
best, cheapest, toughest, smallest? The most boring or
unremarkable?
- What were the most
successful extremes we went to that directly led to an increase in
prospects and paying clients?
- We'll dissect some of
the most responded to emails and articles we created and ask how
you can create the equivalent message you'd take a stand for in
your market.
In my opinion, this was one of Thomas'
favorite business strategies, which he embodied in almost everything
he did. Everything was a game, and had a score sheet, rules, a
definition of winning or losing, and a beginning, middle and end.
Years before Seth Godin wrote The Purple Cow, Thomas was taking a
stand for not being bland. If you haven't asked yourself where you
can find the extreme you'll embrace, it may be that you're in the
difficult-to-distinguish middle where it's difficult to attract
clients.

Strategy #9: Obsess About the Numbers
- How this business
strategy dictated how the business was run.
- How and why it was fun.
- What worksheets, forms

As a former Certified
Public Accountant it may seem natural for Thomas to have been
fixated with numbers and even counting money, but it wasn't in the way you might
think. He did not keep financial statements and in some ways was sloppy about records - that's not what
we'll learn from here. This is about enjoying keeping score
and making it an intrinsic part of the definition of success you
have for your business.
One thing is certain,
based on my experience working with Thomas and since, with hundreds
of business owners: without some kind of a fixation with numbers,

fixate on the content, when the format or the medium can often
become, or surpass the message.
